HISTORY

The location in which Rejdova and the region of Gemer is situated, has been a significant crossroads of many ethnic, cultural, economical and political influences since long time ago, and also the home of Slovak, Hungarian and previously German speaking inhabitants for hundreds of years.

The populating of this area in prehistoric age can be proven by findings of Neolite and Bukovohorska pottery. Findings and relics from Celtic population in the Iron Age are significant. The mining and processing of iron were developed in this area significantly in that age.

The growth of economical meaning of the region begins since populating of this area by German colonists and miners of gold, silver, copper and iron in 12th and 13th century. The development of mining, ironmongery and other crafts later was also accompanied by spry cultural life. Generations of here living and working population together with aristocratic Bebek and Andrassy families left such a heritage for today, which in many cases excesses borders of this region.

Many cultural and historical sights are in villages and towns of region. The most standing out from among of them is Gothic evangelical church in Stitnik with its one of the oldest organ in Slovakia, medieval mural paintings and valuable nobiliary. Exceptionally valuable medieval mural paintings and remarkable woodcarving works adorn also other churches in Kocelovce, Ochtina and Plesivec.
